California state law requires all dogs over 4 months old to be licensed and vaccinated for rabies. The City of Riverside also requires that both dogs and cats be spayed or neutered, and have microchips in case they are lost. Vaccinations must remain current in order for owners to obtain required annual pet licenses. Please ensure you have all of the required documentation in when you purchase a dog license.

About Dog Licensing
Obtaining a dog license is good for you and your dog!
A dog license can help your dog get back home if it is lost. A current license tag tells animal control officers that a dog has a human companion whose contact information should be on file and rapidly accessible. Dogs with current license tags that are impounded at the city/county shelter are held for ten days, five days more than for unlicensed dogs, this allows the shelter to get in contact with you.
A current dog license indicates that a dog has been properly microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a serious public health issue and licensing helps the city monitor compliance with rabies vaccination laws.
Revenue from dog licensing pays for emergency medical care of animals hit by cars, investigation of animal abuse and cruelty and the rabies control program.
